I have been homeschooling in NM for the last 9 years and overall, NM is very homeschool friendly. I take a very unschooling approach, so I may be missing some of the more traditional viewpoints. If you are homeschooling in NM and want to add anything, please feel free to leave a comment. Here is my “(NOT) Back to School” Resources for the homeschoolers in NM.
First of all, you must register with the state within 30 days of starting your homeschool and renew by April 1st. It is a simple online form which you can find at the State’s Department of Education website. There have been some issues with families needing to register offline and not having that option anymore. You can read HSLDA response on this one. That is about it as far as the law goes. View summary of NM home school laws.
There are many homeschool groups in NM, including religious groups. For books, visit Title Wave Books on Eubank, just south of Constitution. They have a great selection of school books and resources for the homeschooler.
Helpful Websites:
- New Mexico Home School Community - no religious affiliations, and no specific way of homeschooling.
- Home School Legal Defense Association
- Christian Association of Parent Educators –NM

A lot of people homeschool here in Pennsylvania too. I used to use the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School and also Connections Academy, rather than traditional homeschool. The virtual charter schools provided the structure and curriculum I needed, though we ended up “unschooling” too but not by design! LOL! Just kidding – I know unschooling is a great method for folks, just as the Charlotte Mason method and other methods work for different people. Just like real estate! For some, door knocking and cold calling works, while others prefer to work by referral…thank goodness there is variety in style, whether it be schooling methods or real estate!
Ashley – many families in FLorida and especially in the Clearwater Florida area are homeschooling – we are very homeschool friendly here.
Great list of resources for those thinking about homeschooling in Albuquerque. We have some friends who homeschool here and it works for them. We send our little ones off to school ourselves but I agree with Karen above – it is great to have options.
Karen – I am thrilled to see how much more mainstream homeschooling is becoming than when I started back in 1995 in NV. Let’s not even talk about how out there is was in the 80′s when I was homeschooled for high school.
Hey there Clearwater! Good to hear how friendly FL is for homeschooling!
Rita having options is what homeschooling is all about! Thanks for stopping by today.
Great information for Albuquerque parents who homeschool. I am sure parents are always looking for good resources for information on schooling in New Mexico. You’re such a pro for putting it all in one place!
Leah – thanks for stopping by. I know how hard it can be to locate information so I hope this helps the homeschooling families in NM.
I have never home-schooled! You provide excellent resources for those who choose to do so in Albuquerque. I admire all who choose to home school! KUDOS!
Paula – Albuquerque has lots of resources for homeschool families.
