In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

You can see this poem at the Veterans Memorial by “Flanders Fields” along with a response by Moina Michael.

Moina’s Response
By: Moina Michael
1915

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heros never dies.

Moina was the one to conceive the idea of wearing red poppies in honor of those who died.

[...] Located off the Gibson Gate is the home of the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial. This beautiful park, honoring those who have courageously served our nation, is showcased by the majestic Sandia Mountains in the distance. Enjoy a photo slideshow at my New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial post. [...]
