Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB) Trivia

Kirtland Air Force Base Fun Facts

Air Force PersonnelKAFB, one of Albuquerque’s largest employers, has a long stable history in the area. Its impact on the city can be seen from the housing needs, which include the new area outside the Eubank gate to the diverse and talented personnel that enriches our city. We are fortunate that air force personnel transferred to Kirtland tend to stay longer than other base assignments.

Some trivia about Kirtland AFB:

Kirtland’s early beginnings started in 1935 when the Chamber of Commerce began lobbying for an air base. In 1939, the Army Air Corps built a flight training base and by 1941, Kirtland had dozens of buildings.

Kirtland was named in 1942 after Col. Roy C. Kirtland, an aviation pioneer.

During WWII, scientists at Kirtland developed and tested the Variable Time Proximity Fuze.

Kirtland Air Force Base monitors space junk at the Starfire Optical Range.

With over 25,000 employees and 80 square miles, Kirtland has a large economic impact on the city of Albuquerque and is one of the largest U.S. Air Force installations.
